Weekly Korean Episode 46 – Intentional future and past

17 Oct

[DOWNLOAD AS MP3]
A quick flashback from last week’s episode:

  1. I am going to eat: 먹일 거에요
  2. I am going to drink: 막실 거에요
  3. I am going: 갈 거에요

Then this week we add two new forms:

Intentional future:
One thing you hear a lot for future tense is 겠. (as you hear in the podcast, sounds a lot like English “get”.) This form is more of the meaning “I intend to, I’m positive it will happen, etc.”

Take the verb base. (everything before 다 in the dictionary) and replace with 겠 어요. (note that it always is 어요, never 아요) in this case.

  1. I’m sure we will eat: 먹겠 어요
  2. I’m sure we will drink: 마시겠 어요
  3. I’m sure we will go: 아겠 어요

Past Probable
The past probable, you will use when you apply a past tense to a verb. An example could be ‘must have’ or ‘probably have’.

  1. Must have eaten: 먹었일 거에요
  2. Must have drank: 마셨을 거에요
  3. Must have went: 갔을 거에요

PAST TENSE

Discussed last week: Simply leave the stem and add the ㅆ어요.
I ate: (먹다)
먹어 + ㅆ 어요 = 먹었어요.
I drank: (마시다)
마셔 + ㅆ 어요 = 마셨어요
I went: (가다)
가다 + ㅆ 어요 = 갔어요

PRESENT TENSE
Simply add 고 있어요 to the stam and you are set!
I am eating: (먹다)
먹 + 고 있어요 = 먹고 있어요
I am drinking: (마시다)
마시+고 있어요
I am going: (가다)
가 + 고 있어요

FUTURE TENSE
For future, you need to put ~ㄹ 거에요 behind the stam. (make it 을 거에요 in case of batchim)
I am going to eat: (먹다)
먹 + ㄹ거에요 =  먹을 거에요
I am going to drink: (마시다)
마시 + ㄹ 거에요 = 마실 거에요
I am going: (가다)
가 + ㄹ거에요 = 갈 거에요
